Ronnie was born around 1943 near Muyinnga, about 100 kilometres west of the Kintore ranges. His family moved extensively across the Pintupi territory up through the Northern Territory, living the traditional ways, which his people have lived for over 40,000 years.
He was initiated into manhood in the early 1950’s at Yumari near his birthplace. Shortly afterwards, due to drought conditions in the 1950’s, Ronnie and his family moved towards Haasts Bluff and then later joined relatives at the newly settled Papunya community. He found work as a fencer making the yards for cattle in the surrounding area.
It was during this time that he started to take an interest in the art movement happening at this time. Shortly after he started painting, he discussed with many people about moving back into the traditional lands, which is the basis of their lives. His goal was made possible by the establishment of the Kintore settlement in 1981.
By being more in touch with his traditional lands and the Dreaming, Ronnie soon emerged as one of Papunya Tula’s major artists. His work reflects his directs ties with his culture, retaining a purity that many other aboriginal artists have not achieved. Ronnie’s work follows the strict Pintupi style of strong circles joined together by connecting lines relating to the people and the land and the Dreamtime.
His work has a simplicity that makes it appealing, yet mysterious as the uninitiated try to understand what he is painting. By painting the Dreamtime he is helping to resurrect the Aboriginal culture as a whole and allow outsiders to learn about one of the oldest cultures in the world. This work is important to the spirituality of this land, bridging the gap between European life and Traditional Aboriginal Life, which is important in exposing and healing this gap.
Being one of the major Aboriginal Artists his work has featured in numerous exhibitions and collections around Australia. He has had solo exhibitions at the Utopia Gallery and the Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi. Several of his group exhibitions include the Dreamtime Gallery, The Australian National Gallery and the Art Gallery of South Australia. He is also in permanent collections at the National Gallery and the Art Gallery of Victoria and the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.

He was awarded the Alice Springs Art Prize during this period. In the early to mid-1990s, Tjampitjinpa emerged as a leading figure in the evolution of Pintupi men's painting. His bold, geometric compositions became emblematic of the period and were included in major survey exhibitions both in Australia and internationally. This culminated in a solo retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2015. As a child he travelled Pintupi country with his family before the drought of the 1950s brought them east to Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) and eventually Papunya, where he was among the youngest of the men who began painting at the founding of the Western Desert art movement in 1971 and an original shareholder of Papunya Tula Artists. He moved to Walungurru (Kintore) in 1983, and it was back on his own country that his practice emerged in full. The Papunya Tula documentation records that the central roundel represents a freshwater spring on an island in the middle of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay), associated with two Tingari Men who met there for ceremonial purposes, each approaching from opposite sides of the lake. Since the events of the Tingari Cycle are secret and sacred, no further detail was provided by the artist. For Tjampitjinpa this was not inherited subject matter in the abstract: his family had moved through this Country on foot, and the sites he painted were places he had known since childhood. Across this large canvas, a single great concentric circle at centre radiates outward in alternating bands of deep red and luminous gold-yellow against a black ground, while four rectangular concentric forms occupy each corner, mapping the surrounding Country. The palette is stripped to its essentials, the composition achieving the clarity of a cartographic statement. This is the bold, scaled-up linear style that Tjampitjinpa pioneered after moving to Walungurru, a mode that came to define the Walungurru painters of the following decade. His work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Musée du quai Branly, Paris, and other major public and private collections nationally and internationally.

It is among the most personal and significant subjects in his practice, and at 190 x 300 cm this 2004 canvas gives it the scale it demands. From the mid-1990s, as the Art Gallery of New South Wales noted in the Catalogue for his 2015 survey exhibition of a forty-year career, Tjampitjinpa began producing works of maze-like line work that he progressively intensified - the intricate key design characteristic of incised objects from the region morphed into a mesmerising web of compositional complexity that expands and contracts across the canvas. This Water Dreaming is exactly that: sweeping arcs of tightly packed parallel lines moving in continuous lateral rhythm across the full width of the canvas, a near-monochromatic field in which country is rendered not as image but as force. In 2004, the year this canvas was made, Tjampitjinpa was elected Chairman of Papunya Tula Artists.

RT980610 PROVENANCE Painted at Kintore, Northern Territory, in 1998 Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Chapman Gallery, Canberra Private collection Canberra, acquired from the above in January 2000 This work is accompanied by a copy of the certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists which states: 'This painting depicts designed associated with the travels of one old Tingari Man. He camped at Kampurarrpa, north of the Ehrenberg Range and applied body paint in preparation for a solo ceremony. He later travelled west to Winparrku (Mt. Webb) and then south-east to Lake MacDonald. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature no further detail was given. Generally, the Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. The Tingari Men were usually followed by Tingari Women and accompanied by novices and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.' © Ronnie Tjampitjinpa/Copyright Agency 2026
