Molly Pwerle

Présentation

Molly Pwerle was a respected Anmatyerre and Alyawarre artist from Atnwengerrp in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory. She was the younger sister of renowned artist Minnie Pwerle and aunt to acclaimed artist Barbara Weir. Molly spent her early years working on pastoral stations, including MacDonald Downs and Utopia Station, before the land was returned to its traditional owners in 1975.

In 2004, at approximately 85 years of age, Molly began her artistic journey, encouraged by her niece Barbara Weir. She joined her sisters, Galya and Emily Pwerle, in painting workshops that led to the creation of vibrant artworks reflecting their Dreamings. Their collaborative efforts produced a powerful body of works celebrated as "The Four Sisters".

Molly's paintings are characterised by bold lines and dynamic compositions, often depicting 'Awelye Atnwengerrp'—women's ceremonial body paint designs—and 'Anemangkerr' (bush melon) Dreamings. Her work captures the essence of her cultural heritage and the spiritual narratives of her Country.

Despite beginning her artistic career later in life, Molly's contributions have been significant. Her artworks have been exhibited nationally and are held in various collections, reflecting the depth of her cultural knowledge and artistic expression.
