Übersicht

Dr George Ward Tjapaltjarri is a highly respected Pintupi elder, ngangkari (traditional healer), and artist, born around 1938 in the remote Gibson Desert near Jupiter Well, Western Australia. He lived a traditional nomadic lifestyle during his early years, deeply connected to his ancestral lands and cultural teachings. In 1964, he and his extended family group made first contact with non-Indigenous Australians, settling in Papunya shortly afterwards.

Known as a powerful healer within his community, Dr George was given the honorary title “Doctor” due to his deep knowledge of bush medicine and spiritual healing. His work as a ngangkari made him a respected figure across Central Australia, often called upon to assist with both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Dr George began painting in the mid-1970s, becoming one of the early members of the Papunya Tula Artists movement. His paintings often depict Tingari Dreaming stories—important ancestral narratives passed down through generations of Pintupi people. These works are characterised by their strong geometric compositions, use of natural ochre pigments, and spiritual depth.

His paintings have been exhibited widely, both in Australia and internationally, and are held in significant public and private collections including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Dr George's work bridges the worlds of healing and storytelling, offering a visual language that preserves culture while continuing to evolve with time.
